Winter camping in Tsumagoi
The colder the night, the closer the fire and the sharper the stars. When you get cold, it is warm inside. At 1,444m, the plateau stays open all winter.
One winter night
From arrival to the morning onsen. Times are a guide.
Arrive
- Open all winter: tents and car stays both work in the snow.
- Check-in opens at 12:00. Winter days are short, so aim to arrive by 16:00.
- Winter tyres are required from November to April.
- In winter, message us on Instagram (@tsumagoicamp) or LINE (@012pteqb) before you come. The live camera on the home page shows the snow.
Pitch
- One free field with no numbered pitches (5 groups a night). Walk it and pick a spot out of the wind.
- You pitch your own tent. Rental tents and a set-up service (ask ahead) are available.
- Snow clearing is best effort: the owner clears it by hand, so heavy snow on the day may not be cleared in time.
Heat
- Rent the wood stove for a tent with a stove jack (one stove, one group a night).
- Or rent the FF diesel heater, which vents outside; we install it. Its fan and igniter need 12V/24V, and you bring the diesel.
- Electric heaters are not allowed. The paid power points (two, at the pump room) are for phones, laptops and lights.
Warm up inside
- The heated office area is open 9:00–24:00. It is in the Work&Camp rate; Camp and car stay add +¥2,000 per guest per night.
- On winter nights, December to March, the midnight pass (¥4,000) keeps the office area open until morning (0:00–9:00) for quiet work. No bedding is lent.
- Hot showers are ¥500 per person (included with Work&Camp), and there is a shared kitchen.
Sleep
- No bedding is provided. Bring a winter sleeping bag and a mat, or rent ours with your booking by the day before (sleeping bag ¥2,000/night, air mat ¥700, foam mat ¥300).
- You sleep in your own tent or vehicle. Quiet hours start at 22:00.
- If weather or wildlife makes your pitch unsafe, booked guests can come into the double-glazed building, free, at any hour.
To the onsen
- Manza Onsen is about 15 minutes by car in winter; Kusatsu about 50–60 via Mihara (the Shiga–Kusatsu road is closed in winter).
- Check-out is by 11:00.
