Rebuilt by hand

Same place, one year on.

August 2025: an old resthouse on the ridge — chairs stacked on the tables, the view still in the windows. We rebuilt it by hand, room by room, into a place to work inside that view. Drag the handles to compare.

  1. The highland view from the workplace — a bell tent and cloud-wrapped mountains
August 2025 — the field from the deck on the survey visit: waist-high grass to the fence line, cloud on the far ridge
    Aug 2025Now
The field from the deck — the August 2025 survey visit, and the tent site today.
  2. Sunset over the hall, the sign and a bell tent on the field
September 2025 — the hall seen from the field, grass still uncut around the deck
    Sept 2025Aug 2026
The hall from the field — September 2025, and August 2026 with the sign up and a bell tent on the grass.
  3. Inside the hall today — long tables and the low sofa pit under the old beams, warm bulbs hanging, green and mist in the window wall
August 2025 — inside the hall as we found it: chairs upturned on the tables, wire racks by the counter, the windows full of green
    Aug 2025Now
The hall — chairs upturned on the tables when we found it. The same beams today, over the lounge and the low sofa pit.
  4. The shared kitchen after the rebuild — black cabinets and brick-pattern walls, steel prep tables, the valley in the corner window
August 2025 — the old commercial kitchen: gas burners under a smoke-stained hood, steel counters, a dark floor
    Aug 2025Now
The kitchen — old burners under a smoke-stained hood. Rebuilt as the shared kitchen, with the mountains in the window.
  5. The washroom after the rebuild — wood-panelled walls, fresh urinals on white tile, a grey resin floor
August 2025 — the washroom as we found it: bare walls, loose wiring above the urinals, old tile underfoot
    Aug 2025Now
The washroom — loose wiring and old tile. Re-panelled in wood, refitted, scrubbed back to clean.
  6. The work corner today — desks, monitors and office chairs at the window wall, mountains and cloud beyond the glass
August 2025 — chairs stacked against the window wall, the mountains already framed in the glass
    Aug 2025Now
The window corner — chairs stacked against the glass then; desks and monitors facing the same mountains now.

Step inside in 360°

Three places in 360°, exactly as we found them on the August 2025 survey walk — the hall, the old shop room, and the deck outside. Tap one and drag to look around.

  • 360° — the hall as we found it, August 2025: chairs stacked on the tables, the view still in the windows

The hall — chairs on the tables, the view already in the windows.

  • 360° — August 2025, the old shop room as we found it: empty shelving units, a bare counter, fluorescent tubes overhead

The old shop room — bare shelves and a counter, nothing else.

  • 360° — August 2025, outside the resthouse: white loungers and wooden benches on the deck, mountains all around under a summer sky

Outside — the deck, the benches, and the view that made us stay.

Tsumagoi means "thinking of someone you love."

We reopened the mountain that carries that name.
